Meet Cathy Orr

Professional Organizer and Life Simplifier

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cathy Orr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

  • I am a very organized and focused person. I put one foot in front of the other and keep moving. I don’t think this habit is a magic secret and I think anyone can live life this way. Because I am in the organizing business, perhaps my skills are more honed. But, I can teach this to anyone.

Every time a person comes to visit me from out of town, and stays at my house, they say my life is so relaxing, easy. Yet, I work on my businesses many hours each week (40-60).

What is my secret? My house is completely organized, I am on top of tasks, and I live in the present moment. The secret is that I don’t let a lot of excess into my life (junk, too many commitments, etc.) and remain focused. When people leave my house, I can tell that I’ve influenced them because they start paring down the minute they get home.

This habit provides me more time to do the things I enjoy (yoga, reading, spending time with loved ones and friends) and less time chasing my tail.

  • I own The Uncluttered Life and Life Hack Decks with my daughter. I am a mom of two adult children, grandma, cat mom, wife, daughter, sister and close friend. I am a yogi and a person who focuses on an inner connection to myself. I meditate regularly and try to quiet my mind so that I can think clearly at all times. I am methodical. All these things got me where I am today.

Aside from my business, I also give back. I have rescued a cat that developed mast cell tumors at less than a year old. He was not expected to live. I have dedicated myself to keeping him healthy, happy and alive. He is now 6.5, one of the only living cats with this condition that has lived this long. Maybe in the entire world. That is the type of person I am. If you’re with me, you’re with me for life.

I am an expert in Medicare, and have volunteered with the State of California and the State of Texas in their HICAP Program (federally funded). I have a MA in Medical Anthropology, am certified as a Patient Advocate, and have an MS in Health Policy and Law. While all these things seem random, they aren’t. Instead, they all focus me toward one goal. Helping others, fighting for those in need, and seeing ways to achieve more by reducing stress and clutter. I believe in paying it forward.

Nothing in life is easy. It’s our dedication that sets us apart.

  • I am a quiet person. I like a quiet dinner out, early. When friends come to visit, I am not particularly a tour guide, but I do show them a good time. When my best friend comes to visit, whether it’s in Texas or in California, we walk. A lot. We talk. A lot. We catch up. We visit. We cook together and we spend time sharing our thoughts. And we have quiet time, too.
When I lived in California, I didn’t run her all over Orange County, San Diego or LA. Instead, we went to the beach and walked miles. We walked at Salt Creek Beach, at the park, on Balboa Island. We walked in downtown San Clemente and maybe Laguna Beach. It’s wonderful just to spend hours walking with someone, meandering, feeling connected.

  • My yoga instructor of 20 years deserves a shoutout. Her name is Diana Christinson, and she is a wonderful woman in Southern California who teaches about energy, movement, and focus. She inspires me.

Marie Kondo has been a big inspiration because she is focused on living a simpler life.

Karen Kingston, the author, inspires me. I love her book, Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui.

My daughter is an inspiration to me because I can see her kindness reflected in her son’s eyes. She and I work together and she has a lot on her plate.

I admire anyone who leads a life of “one foot in front of the other,” doesn’t need a lot of recognition, yet gets up and tries their best every single day.

Meet Cathy Orr

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cathy Orr a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

  • Cathy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.

I have been practicing the art of simplified living for many years. In the course of doing so, I became a professional organizer through Marie Kondo (KonMari Method®). I have also paid a lot of attention to and follow Karen Kingston. Karen is focused on decluttering and the effects decluttering and letting go have on a person’s energy. I followed up by researching studies at Johns Hopkins and UCLA about cortisol and the way clutter affects people, especially women. I am a yoga practitioner and have been for the past twenty years. So, in essence, all this goes together for me. I realize that energy has a huge impact on the way we lead our lives.

The defining moment is watching the change in energy people experience after a decluttering session. I believe that people hold on to many things they no longer want or need, but have trouble letting go. When my partner and I come into people’s homes, sometimes they are anxious. Sometimes they cry. Sometimes they are overwhelmed and don’t know how to express the way they’re feeling. We have techniques to help them work through these feelings and get the decluttering process moving. We’ve seen our work help woman and men.

As professionals in this field, we know how to work with these feelings and get a client’s life back on track. Or at least help them take the first step. From this knowledge, we have designed a deck of cards called Declutter Deck®. It helps people who are interested in moving forward through the decluttering process get comfortable with the idea of living with less. It gently guides them through the home decluttering and organizing process. In the process, they are able to let go of things that no longer serve them. We sell them on our website www.theunclutteredlife.com. They are also great for people who have ADHD and stuck in repetitive patterns that are ineffective. The cards are great for those who work in the mental health field with those who struggle with ADHD.

  • As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I am a Certified Master in Marie Kondo’s KonMari Method®. What that means is that I am one of about 50 people worldwide who has as many decluttering and organizing hours and skills as I do. I studied with Marie Kondo in 2019, and since then have helped a great number of people get control of their lives. I believe that living with less is so important. Excess brings us down. We have to manage it, store it, and step over it while we’re trying to get on with our day. I see that many people’s lives could be simplified if they could only let go of that which holds them down.

In addition, The Uncluttered Life, Inc. has partnered with Inspired Closets DFW to provide services to those who purchase an organization space of $10,000.00 or more. As a gift to their clients who meet the criteria, they offer four hours of our organization services free of charge to get a client’s new space in order. The services can range from decluttering to putting their things away in the space they have purchased. We find that people are relieved to have a professional come in to organize their space once it has been installed.

As a spin-off of our organizing services, we developed a line of card decks called Hack Decks™ that help simplify a person’s life. We offer five decks, one of which is the Declutter Deck®. Hack Decks™, sold on the website www.hackdecks.com, is about health and wellness. They are also about simplifying life and working through some of life’s most difficult transition periods. We offer the Declutter Deck® on both our www.theunclutteredlife.com site, and on the www.hackdecks.com site.

In addition, on the www.hackdecks.com site, we also offer four other decks. These include: Date Deck™, which helps people find more fun in their lives; Dorm Deck™ for college-bound students to help them organize their new living environment and make an easier than normal transition to college life; New Mama Deck™ for the transition to motherhood; and Random Acts of Kindness Deck™. We believe that everyone has the ability to help others. The decks sell for $19.95 and make a fantastic gift for those who are making these transitions in life.

  • Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?

I think the most important thing we offer is compassion and understanding during the decluttering and organizing process. People are so overwhelmed by clutter. Sometimes this embarrasses them and they try to hide their feelings. Other times, their feelings just pour out and they start crying the minute we walk in to help them. This can happen for a lot of reasons. For example, maybe our client has just sent their child off to college for the first time, they want to organize, yet they feel a loss. Maybe they have just become empty nesters. Or, maybe it’s the overload of toys that comes with being a new mom. Others may have just lost a spouse. Whatever the circumstances, confronting clutter is also about confronting life and the changes people go through as their households change.

We understand that a lot of times this is painful and people are stressed or upset. For this reason, we offer compassion and empathy through the decluttering and organizing process to help people manage their feelings. Our clients ALWAYS have a backstory, and we work with them in a compassionate and caring way.

  • We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.

Actually, my business partner is my daughter. My daughter lived an organized life since she was small. I have always been very organized and throughout her life, she saw how much I could accomplish because I didn’t have clutter in the way. As she became a new mom, she saw what I had been trying to teacher her throughout her life. If you deal with what is directly in front of you rather than procrastinating or collecting excess, then you can accomplish more, and be more productive. Even find a little time to yourself and be more present for your children!

Having a young child, toys are everywhere. I’ve seen her work to change her living environment so that her son has more space to play. I’ve also seen her teach him to put his toys away after he’s finished playing so that he learns responsibility for the things he has. This was a lesson I taught her. The upside is that he knows where all his toys are and that helps him feel in control of himself. He’s only three but he knows how to find and put away his things.

Another thing that is important to point out is that people go through periods in their lives when excess is part of the growing process. This includes teenagers. As an organizer, it’s important to understand these periods and make adjustments so that the growing process takes place. Recently, we helped a teenagers with ADHD get his life in order. It was so gratifying to see the smiles on his face as he found things he had been missing. When we work with teens, it’s important for us to help them learn to take charge of themselves and their environment. These skills will be important throughout life.

Conversations With Cathy Orr

Local Stories with VoyageDallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cathy Orr

  • I have always been interested in home organizing in one form or another my entire life. I was on organizing bandwagon long before “spark joy” or any of the current trends in organizing were a “thing”. In fact, my background in anthropology was probably my lead-up to organizing. Cultural anthropology focuses a lot on classifying things/people/behaviors into categories. My mind just thinks like this.

I became a Marie Kondo consultant in September 2019, and since that time have risen from the “green” level to Certified Master. A certified Master is the culmination of client hours equal to 1500+hours of organizing. In fact, I have many more than the 1500 required for this certification. I have been organizing, in one form or another, for the past twenty years

I look at home organizing and. What Marie Kondo calls “tidying” as a way to make sense of your. Life. Life is chaotic, and keeping things straight makes all the difference in the world. That means instead of your things looking like hodgepodge, your life flows. You know why you own what you have and why you have it. The rest is just clutter and a distraction. Of course, there are always those few things that you just need to keep, but they are secondary to surrounding yourself with only the things that make you happy. I believe that a person’s environment should reflect who they are now rather than who they used to be or hope to be someday. This actually brings our clients a lot of happiness and peace.

There are 22 Marie Kondo home organizing consultants in the state of Texas. Of those, there are seven who are in the local DFW area. Of those, I am one of two Certified Masters who works locally in the DFW area. I work with my daughter, who has been the recipient of years of organization training by me. To say that efficiency and productivity run through our family is an understatement.

In addition, I hold two master’s degrees, one in Medical Anthropology and another in Health Policy and Law, from UC San Francisco. I have worked in the healthcare field, directly with Medicare and State agencies, and as a Patient Advocate. I am, for that reason, considered a medical paperwork expert.

I can help seniors who are downsizing or with medical bill organization. In other words, I know what medical information/bills to keep, discard, pay and what is not their responsibility. I have also volunteered both for the State of California and Texas for HICAP, which is the free Health Information, Counseling, and Advocacy Program of Medicare. I’m trained in Medicare policy from the legal/medical perspective at UCSF and am able to guide seniors in figuring out medical paperwork messes. This is especially helpful for adult children of seniors who may need direction when closing out an estate or assisting an aging or ill parent. I understand the medical nuances of healthcare billing.

A businesswoman at heart, in 2019, I launched The Uncluttered Life, Inc., and organization company with my daughter. We taught people the Marie Kondo organization technique, organized homes, and built our business in California. In 2021 we moved the business to Texas when we decided, after the pandemic, to be closer to family.

After seeing a shift during the pandemic, with my daughter, we recently launched a line of prompt cards, including one called Declutter Deck®. Declutter Deck prompt cards are sold individually on The Uncluttered Life, Inc. website (www.theunclutteredlife.com). These easy-to-perform card prompts (52 in each deck) help people get and stay organized after we organize and leave their space. Or individuals can tackle the job themselves without our help in short, 30-minute blocks of time. After working through the 52-card deck, their home is completely organized.

We also have a sister site, Hack Decks™ (www.lifehackdecks.com). On our Hack Decks™ site, we offer a number of similar prompt card decks that help with life hacks to simplify life’s transitional times, Whether it’s having a baby or going off to college, these prompt decks provide inspiration for keeping life as simple as possible during challenging times.

There is a theme that runs through everything we do. Simplify life. Lessen what makes you feel overwhelmed and fatigued. These decks, and our home organization service, provide more time to do the things you love. Too much “stuff” holds you down. We try to ease the pain points you may be feeling by maximizing your time without doing any extra work. It’s just that simple. And, as a bonus, all of it helps improve mental health.

  • For sure, the pandemic was a struggle. We had gone from working in people’s homes to being unable to do that. For this reason, we developed an online organization product or virtual organization. With our online product, we can work virtually with clients to help them get their lives in order. We typically work with a client once a week, provide incentives to keep them moving, organization assignments, and help them pick out organization products. Then, virtually, we help them organize their homes and put everything away.
Because of the pandemic, we also thought that it would be important for people to be able to do things on their own. For this reason, we developed prompt decks. In particular, Declutter Deck® was good for people during the pandemic. That’s because people realized that their homes were simultaneously their living and workspace. The lines became blurred, and a lot of people had trouble relaxing at home. They always felt “on” and overwhelmed. Since the pandemic social distancing has eased, we find that a lot of people are still working from home. This virtual organizing option is great for those who have limited time and/or a limited budget. We try to make everything we do affordable, and this is particularly so.

  • I am going to speak about my daughter in this section since I believe that she helps us distinguish our services from others. My daughter is an art major from UC Berkeley who comes with tremendous design experience. For that reason, we are not only able to organize a space; we are also able to make it beautiful. In other words, when we leave, the client has the “look” that so many people want. We can style an area (for example, a closet) to make it look like it’s right out of a showroom. This is a particular talent that she has. In tandem, we work particularly well together. I come with more of the organization background, and she comes with that design eye. The two meld beautifully.

For me, I was in the healthcare field for years, and I love paperwork. When we go into a person’s home, paperwork is a tough go for many. The saying goes that a single piece of paper takes up very little room. But, because people are so afraid to throw things away, they keep everything. And then, paperwork becomes monumental. Piles upon piles.

I am able to sort through that type of thing – the mounds of dreaded paperwork. I’ve done that for many people, and they are just so relieved once I leave. In fact, I’ve gone through boxes and boxes of paperwork, some of which requires a very keen eye. I am able to make sense of it all. And I also enjoy the process.

  • Marie Kondo and the KonMari organization deserve credit. They brought those of us who have always loved organizing into the mainstream. And they have given us a platform to help others.

In addition, Marie Kondo recently partnered with a company that helps make the most of a client’s wardrobe using AI. We will be participating in this unique concept that has the look and feel of shopping at Nordstrom, for example, using your own clothing. The concept will appear in Vogue and launch during New York Fashion Week. We are thrilled to help bring this to people in the DFW area.

I also love Karen Kingston, who was one of the pioneers in the field of organization and energy. Her book, Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui, is a huge inspiration to me.

I credit my yoga teacher for showing me Kingston’s book years ago and helping me understand energy flow. Energy gets stuck when you don’t discard and move things. I understand this on a very deep level.

I also thank my clients who have allowed us into their homes. It’s scary for people to go through their things. We absolutely understand that. And we appreciate that they are willing to take the risk to let us help.

And we also thank Denee from Inspired Closets DFW, who has allowed us to partner with her and her designers to organize closets after their installations on qualifying purchases

Especially, I credit my daughter for her hard work, insight, and vision. She is a true talent.

Daily Inspiration: Meet Danica Carson

Danica Carson Hack Decks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danica Carson.

  • I graduated from UC Berkeley. In 2020, right before lock down my husband got a job here in DFW. I was pregnant with our son, Rowan. The country went into lockdown, and being pregnant, we didn’t want to risk traveling, so we bought a house remotely in May and moved in July 3rd.

Hack Decks came about from another business my mom and I run. We have a professional organizing company called The Uncluttered Life. We have extensive experience in organization – complete with a Master Level distinction in the KonMari Method (Marie Kondo’s method). I came up with our first deck, Declutter Deck, as a way to help our clients stay organized and for other people trying to get organized. Not everyone has the budget to hire professional organizers, but that shouldn’t be a barrier to having an organized and functional home. We distilled all of our knowledge into Declutter Deck® to come up with mini-organizing prompts to help people who don’t know where to start or what to do get their homes in order.

After launching Declutter Deck®, I decided to create our second deck, Date Deck. My husband and used to do something fun and new every weekend, and with lockdown and being new parents, we weren’t getting to do that much. Not to mention, we were in a new state, and we had no idea what there was to do or where to go. So, I put 52 of my favorite types of dates that we used to go on down on paper and turned them into date idea prompts, and we slowly got to know the area and fell in love with DFW. The best thing about Date Deck, in my opinion, is that it removes the work associated with having fun. No endless scrolling or trying to figure out what to do. Just a simple prompt to guide you on your date adventure. It removes the pressure and mental fatigue that comes with having an endless list of things to get done and wanting to maximize your personal time.

We also recently launched Dorm Deck, a deck designed to help college freshmen thrive during their first year of college.

Next month, we will be launching our New Mama Deck. This deck is so close to my heart, and I can’t wait for it to come out. It’s all about taking care of yourself after you have a baby so that you can enjoy this stage of life instead of get through it. Mama matters, too!

  • No, definitely not smooth. Though, I can’t imagine it ever is for anyone starting a business. We had to fight for trademarks and copyrights, change the name of some decks, and even company! But here we are, and we got everything we needed.

  • I have always been very design-oriented. I studied design and was even an art major for a while before switching to an interdisciplinary major. I always found being creative to be very fulfilling. I’ve worked in social media and built websites, and I truly enjoy it. When covid started, everyone started organizing their homes, and I ended up getting into something I call “decor-organizing.” All that means is that I like to make functional organization pretty. I use decor to hide organization or enhance it. That’s how I ended up a professional organizer. We have recently been awarded the Decorganize® trademark, so you know we really believe in this method of combining beautiful items with storage.

  • You’re never going to know everything you need to know. Just start and figure it out as you go. You’ll make mistakes, but you’ll learn.

Reaching the "Master" level is the culmination of client hours equal to 1500+ hours of tidying. The KonMari Consultant Badge Recognition Program recognizes those Consultants who have attained the highest achievement level. Our local Cathy Orr is one of them.

The Uncluttered Life DFW - Living Magazine Profile

BY DREW ANDERSON

For most people, life can almost always be described as chaotic. Our schedules are packed with appointments, meetings, chauffeuring our children or a million other responsibilities that consume both our time and energy. Cathy and Danica, a mother and daughter tandem from Arlington, know the feeling well. They have both experienced the “not enough hours in the day” lifestyle. The biggest secret they discovered to surviving that lifestyle and the chaos of a crowded schedule is organization. This discovery led to the creation of their business, The Uncluttered Life, Inc.

The Uncluttered Life offers decluttering and organizing services to create an environment that maximizes your time, money and energy. What they offer goes far beyond straightening up a pantry or tidying a closet. Their goal is to not only provide relief, but also to instill knowledge that helps their clients develop life-long organizational skills. According to Cathy, “what people don’t understand is that your organizational system, or lack-there-of, is the foundation of your home and how it operates. People don’t realize how big of an impact your space has on you”. A study done at UCLA found people with cluttered and unorganized lives had higher stress hormones and were more prone to feeling overwhelmed or exhausted. Through The Uncluttered Life, Cathy and Danica aim to break bad habits and help their clients remove burdens. “Clients have repeatedly told us that since having us do their spaces, they feel calmer, happier, and more energized”.

Currently, The Uncluttered Life offers three main services:

  • In-Home Organizing: The professionals do the heavy lifting of decluttering and organizing anywhere from one room to your entire house.

  • Remote Declutter Coaching: Virtual meetings with a “declutter coach” to help you formulate a game plan to tackle the areas in your life causing you the most difficulty. Available in individual, hourly consultations.

  • Digitizing: Consolidating and archiving all your important paperwork. Everything from medical records to children’s artwork can be digitally backed-up onto a maintainable system. Digital clutter is a real source of stress for many people. They also focus on digitizing photographs. They particularly like Chatbooks, which makes order out of the chaos of old (and new) photographs.

Cathy and Danica both offer unique skill sets that make them an organizational dream team. Cathy, who is one of only 50 people worldwide classified as a Marie Kondo KonMari Method® Certified Master Organizer, has been organizing people’s homes for over twenty years. She also specializes in organizing medical paperwork, having earned multiple graduate-level degrees in Patient Advocacy and Health Policy and Law. Danica graduated from UC Berkeley with an inter-disciplinary major combining fine art, visual studies, media, communications, history, and sociology. She has also studied photography and college-level art. According to Danica, her education and a passion for interior design “allow me to look at life from a visual perspective in my approach to organization.” She specializes in creating unique, functional spaces with a designer look.

Cathy and Danica started The Uncluttered Life as an organizational company. Their passion, however, is in helping their clients find their focus in the present. They want to help you streamline your life so you can focus on the things that make you happy without getting bogged down in the messes of the past. The Uncluttered Life® - Organized pantry, a decluttered kitchen

Living Magazine “Ask the Expert”

Ask the Expert

What is the difference between decluttering and organizing?

Decluttering means to remove clutter by donating, recycling or discarding, not packing things away, giving them to others, or moving things from room to room. Decluttering is the first step to organizing a home. Once you have decluttered, it is easier to organize.

Often confused with decluttering, organizing is the step that comes after decluttering. Organizing means creating a plan for an area of your home, such as a closet. Decluttering and organizing save you time, money and energy, with the end goal of creating a functional and peaceful environment in which to thrive. Most people like the organizing aspect of decluttering and organizing because they enjoy purchasing storage containers from the likes of Target® and The Container Store®. If purchasing storage containers first, organization is more difficult. Cathy and Danica show you what you need to purchase to store your things rather than the other way around.

What are the physical and psychological effects of clutter?

Clutter can increase cortisol, the “stress hormone.” A study by UCLA found a link between a high density of household objects and elevated cortisol levels. Messy spaces signal the need for future cleaning, and the mental weight of this increases stress. According to the UCLA study, clutter mentally and physically affects women more than men. And the Mayo Clinic suggests that clutter can decrease your ability to focus and be productive. Existing in a cluttered environment taxes your brain because the cluttering objects compete for your attention. Further studies by St. Lawrence University and Princeton University show people with cluttered homes tend to suffer from insomnia or exhaustion because the stress of clutter affects their mental energy. Read here to learn more about the connection between clutter, stress, elevated cortisol levels and anxiety.

What should I keep/discard when I declutter?

Keep the things that reflect who you are today, not who you were, or where you anticipate being in the future. In other words, your external and internal environments need to match. Many people hold on to things from their past, such as clothing that no longer fits or is outdated. They frequently ask themselves the “what if” questions, “What if this comes back in style?” or “What if I want this again in the future?” These questions can be paralyzing during the decluttering process.

The real purpose of decluttering is to surround yourself with the things you love, give your life purpose, and reflect your true self. Life changes, and decluttering focuses on letting go of things that no longer serve you. By surrounding yourself with what you love, your mood is lighter, and you feel less overwhelmed.

Can I declutter by myself?

Having help in the decluttering process makes letting go of items easier. Many people get anxious or have difficulty making decisions about what to keep or discard. With the help of a professional who brings an objective perspective, decisions flow more easily and help you feel more confident in your choices.

Isn’t hiring a professional organizer expensive?

In the long run, hiring a professional organizer saves you time and money. When you’re organized, you know what you own, reduces overbuying, rebuying, and allows you to live with less. By living with less, you create a life of more. Not only does organizing free up time, money, and resources, but it also allows you to feel happier. Hiring an organizer is an investment in your future, and your physical and mental wellbeing.
